This 8-week course is a comprehensive introduction to throwing on the potter’s wheel, designed for complete beginners. You’ll start by learning the basics: preparing clay, centering, and forming simple shapes. As your confidence grows, you’ll move on to bowls, trimming techniques, and surface decoration using coloured slips.

Description

You’ll also be introduced to slip decoration and glazing. You will be given a demonstration on how glaze works ans transform each piece in the kiln. As the course progresses, you’ll have time to try more advanced forms like bottles or mugs, while developing your personal style.

Alongside skill-building, this course encourages creativity, focus, and the calming, tactile joy of working with your hands. By the end, you’ll have a small collection of your own ceramics and a strong foundation to continue your pottery journey.

Week 1 – Introduction to Throwing

  • Wedging clay and getting familiar with the wheel.
  • Demo: throwing a cylinder.
  • Practice centering and basic throwing sequence.

Week 2 – Throwing Bowls

  • Recap and demo: throwing a bowl.
  • Focus on hand placement and technique.

Week 3 – Turning & Trimming

  • Demo: trimming bases and making foot rings.
  • Use tools to refine leather-hard work.

Week 4 – Slip Decoration

  • Intro to decorating with coloured slips.
  • Demo and experimentation with methods like brushing, trailing, sgraffito.

Week 5 – Glazing Basics

  • Bisque-fired work ready to glaze.
  • Demo: dipping and pouring.
  • Learn glaze consistency and application.

Week 6 – Advanced Forms

  • Demo: collars (bottles), handles (mugs), and wide dishes.
  • Try new throwing techniques.

Week 7 – Studio Practice

  • Practice and work on the techniques that you have been taught.
  • Decide between turning, slip decorating, or glazing prep.

Week 8 – Finishing Touches

  • Final trims or decoration.
  • Prepare work for final bisque firing.

Once your pieces are fired and ready, they can be taken home for £12 per kilo.

Please note there are no classes during the school’s half term week.

Cancellation and Refunds

We understand that sometimes plans change. If the you are not able to attend the course, please inform us by email at least 2 days before the course start date.

If we are able to re-sell your space, you shall only be liable for an administration fee of £20.

If we are not able to re-sell your space, the following shall apply:

  • Cancellations made within 10 days of the start date will be non-refundable.
  • Cancellations made within 11-30 days of the start date will be refunded 50% of the Fee.
  • Cancellations made more than 30 days in advance of the course start date will be charged £20 to cover administration charges and the balance of the Fee refunded.

Please note that missed portions of any multi-day Course cannot be carried over to any other Course.
